It seems that in life and in passing, Tupac Shakur, the young man that grew from humble beginnings to a household name in the homes of all races and numerous nationalities, all accomplished by his twenties, has never ceased to remain relevant and the standard to which the “greatest” Hip-Hop artists are held to. There are two names that always come up in every discussion regarding Hip-Hop legends, one is Notorious B.I.G. a.k.a. Biggie Smalls, the other is Tupac. The top names were also rivals at a sensationalized time in Hip-Hop, but both still remain favorites on many fans' playlists today.
Despite the controversy that followed Tupac in the studio and in the street, he remains a voice, face, and spirit that is seen, felt, and respected to this very day. This year he received his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and now another accomplishment is upon him.
According to a report from Vibe, Tupac’s Greatest Hits compilation accomplished a significant achievement this week in the Billboard 200 albums chart that put him beyond The Beatles.
The 1998 release officially hit 491 weeks on the long-running chart on Tuesday, September 12th, a day before the 27th anniversary of his passing. With this achievement, Greatest Hits has outperformed The Beatles’ 1969 album Abbey Road by one week. This is in great part due to records like “California Love,” “Changes,” “Hit ‘Em Up,” “Hail Mary,” and more.
This puts Tupac’s project, which peaked at #3 on the chart, in the top tier of timeless Hip-Hop albums.
He joins Kendrick Lamar’s Good Kid m.A.A.d City, which has remained on the Billboard 200 for 567 weeks, and Eminem’s Curtain Call, which has remained on the chart for 648 weeks.
