According to a report from Yahoo, in March of 2023, it was made known that Tyler Perry was one of the interested parties in a bidding war to gain ownership of BET. Two months later Paramount had a change of heart and decided not to sell. Perry is now revealing his experience in the matter and why he will never consider buying the network again.
“I was disappointed about it for a number of reasons,” stated Perry during a Bloomberg Equality Summit in Atlanta on Wednesday, October 18th, according to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “The way it happened was disrespectful in a lot of ways.”
The outlet mentioned that the Jazzman’s Blues visionary didn’t go in-depth, but stated, “Don’t try to get me to pay for something that’s not worth anywhere near the value.” Paramount was reportedly seeking upwards of $3 billion for BET Media Group, which includes BET Networks, BET+, and VH1. Perry declined to meet their asking price.
When asked if he would consider purchasing BET if it were up for sale again, he responded, “No.” Adding, “God bless Paramount. I’m still working with them. I wish them the best.”
If an agreement had been reached, Paramount would have maintained a minority stake in BET Media Group.
Many, including Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, thought that out of the bidders competing for BET, which included himself, Diddy, Byron Allen, Kenya Barris, Shaq, and Tyler Perry, Perry had the greatest chance at acquisition. Jackson even considered BET to be “Tyler Perry’s network,” explaining to Vulture, “He’s done enough work there to dominate that. And not even only dominate — I don’t think they’ve explored what it would be like not having a Tyler. And he’s created enough content that if they didn’t sell the company to him, he could go across the street and say, ‘I’m going to start my own.’”
Nevertheless, Perry continues to succeed, as he just signed a first-look deal with Netflix and is gearing up to tell his story in the new film, Maxine’s Baby: The Tyler Perry Story.
